What is a NIE number?

NIE is translated as the Foreigner’s Identification Number (Número de Identificación de Extranjero).

The NIE number is the legal number assigned by the Spanish National Police to foreign residents who don’t have Spanish citizenship so that they can carry out legal activities in Tenerife.

Why do I need a NIE number?

Your NIE number is needed in some of the most common procedures:

  • Opening a bank account
  • Paying taxes in Tenerife (Spain)
  • Buying or selling property
  • Buying or selling motor vehicles
  • Inheritance
  • Arrange utilities (but not a mobile phone)

The list goes on but as a general guide, any activities of a legal nature will require a NIE number.

Can I avoid traveling to Tenerife to sign the deed?

Yes. You can give us power of attorney, and we will represent you at the notary.
